CHAPTER SEVEN

JULIE

My insides felt like they were made of melted butter. Things were too slippery to hold on to, too warm, too hot. It was too much.

I tried to ignore every brush of Garrett’s arm against mine as we drove back to his house. But, because I was sitting so close to him, it was impossible not to feel the heat from his arm, or the way he drove with only his left hand, leaving his right on his knee, which was dangerously close to mine.

I knew that if he thought I’d not welcome it, he wouldn’t do it…but there were too many moments between us over the past month for him not to know that I wanted him. I thought back to how his thumb traced over my bottom lip, and how he said I was his.

It made the hot buttery feeling return in full force. I had no idea what to do, or what my siblings would do, but I didn’t want to take advantage of Garrett, or his massive house. I would, however, take the rest of the night and stop worrying. Tonight, my siblings would be safe, and we’d be taken care of. Who knows what would have happened, if I hadn’t had found this job. Where we would have ended up? The thought of it terrified me.

Suddenly, there was a light touch to my kneecap, and I glanced down, seeing Garrett’s massive palm resting against my leg. He added a little bit of pressure, right before he turned onto his street, and parked the truck.

God, I wanted more than just that touch. I wanted more from him period. But I wasn’t going to put myself in a position where I could get hurt, or be considered the fling who got tossed away the second something real and substantial walked in. I had no delusions that a man like Garrett would ever be satisfied with an eighteen-year-old high school drop out.

Once the kids piled inside, and we settled the twins and kids with food, we easily got caught up in the evenings tasks; dinner clean up, finding sleeping bags for Layla and Brody, and setting them up in the extra guest room that Garrett had previously piled his gym equipment into. He had begun physically moving everything, piece by piece, without me even having to ask.

I did, however, agree to help him.

We were moving in stilted silence around the smaller room, gathering his exercise equipment when I braved speaking up.

“Thanks for doing this, I seriously can’t explain how much it means to us.”

He was in the middle of moving a heavy ball, his arms flexing, when he said, “It’s no trouble. I work out at the gym anyway, this stuff just collects dust. Besides, we’ll need to start getting this room cleaned up for them anyway.”

I paused, holding the back and wrist brace to my chest. “What?”

He looked like a little kid, caught peeking at his crush, with the tips of his ears turning red alongside the smooth skin of his muscular neck.
